In the 146th meeting of the Kosovo Government held on September 29th 2010, the Government decided to make the Sign Language an official language in the Republic of Kosovo. According to Deputy Prime Minister RamëManaj, who presented his arguments in favor of this decision, from now on the community of people with disabilities which uses the sign language, will be considered a minority community in Kosovo, who are guarantee their right to communicate in Sign Language.
With the same decision (06/146), the Office for Good Governance within the Office of the Prime Minister is obliged to draft an action policy for implementing this decision and at the same time, to clearly determine the duties and obligations for institutions which need to offer services of the sign language. The Kosovo Association for Deaf Individuals has been demanding for years to make sign language official. According to this association, the deaf individuals in Kosovo are faced with many problems when accessing official institutions, as in cases of obtaining birth certificates, registration, voting, etc.
