Employment and representation of women in Kosovo – statistical report for 2019

30/01/2020

GAP institute published the statistical report for 2019 “Employment and representation of women in Kosova”. This report in statistical manner shows position of women in employment, education and social welfare.

Statistics for 2019 show that in Kosovo, girls and women are as interested in education and employment as much as boys and men. However, their employment rate, especially in senior management positions, remains very low compared to men. These differences are more pronounced especially at the central level. Until the day of Prime Minister Haradinajs resignation, only 10% of senior management positions (ministers, deputy ministers, general secretaries) were managed by women. Even in leadership positions in the municipal administration, womens representation remains quite low, at only 20%.

Except in managerial positions, in general, the rate of employed women remains lower than that of men. While the unemployment rate for men in 2019 was 22.8% or 6.3 pp lower than in 2018, the unemployment rate for women was 32.7% or 2.1 pp higher than in 2018. Thus, while the unemployment among men has decreased, for the women happened the opposite. On the other hand, womens interest in finding a job is about the same as that of men. The number of job seekers registered with the Employment Agency in 2019 was 52,343, while the number of women jobseekers registered with the Employment Agency was 43,547. In addition, over 6,700 women job seekers completed their bachelor degrees, which is higher than the number of men jobseekers with the same profile.

This is the third annual report that, statistically, the GAP Institute aims to highlight differences in the representation of women in the labor market, education and social welfare
