Market Access Challenges and Opportunities for Women-Owned and Minority-Owned Businesses in Kosovo

21/02/2024

GAP Institute publishes the research report entitled "Market Access Challenges and Opportunities for Women-Owned and Minority-Owned Businesses in Kosovo", supported by USAID through the Inclusive Economic Engagement Activity implemented by Community Development Fund (CDF). This publication provides an in-depth analysis of the barriers and opportunities facing women and minority-owned enterprises in Kosovo, with a particular focus on the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The findings of the report reveal significant challenges these businesses encounter in accessing markets, including financial constraints, difficulties in forging partnerships with large retailers, and the impact of prevailing gender stereotypes. Despite these obstacles, the importance of unique and competitive product offerings has been highlighted as a key factor for achieving a sustainable market presence for women and minority-owned businesses.

Additionally, the report brings to light the increased digital engagement by women and minority-owned businesses following the pandemic, alongside a noted deficiency in digital marketing skills among these groups. The multifaceted nature of the pandemic's impact, posing challenges for established businesses while creating opportunities for new ventures, has been thoroughly examined.

In response to these findings, GAP Institute proposes several recommendations aimed at central and local governments, as well as international and local organizations. These include conducting market analyses to identify potential sectors for growth, promoting entrepreneurship among women and ethnic minorities, and ensuring inclusivity in public procurement.  In addition, the provision of tailored financial resources, equipment, and assistance, along with support in overcoming barriers to business association membership, are among the suggested measures to enhance market access for these businesses.

GAP Institute's publication emphasizes an appeal to stakeholders across the board to actively participate in shaping an economic ecosystem that promotes inclusivity.
